Description

The MG996R 180° Metal Gear Servo Motor is a high-torque servo designed for applications requiring powerful and controlled angular movement. It is widely used in robotics, remote-controlled vehicles, mechanical automation systems and embedded electronics projects.

Unlike ordinary DC motors, which rotate continuously when powered, the MG996R is a positional servo motor that moves its output shaft to a commanded angle within its supported rotation range. This makes it particularly useful for robotic arms, grippers, steering mechanisms and other applications requiring controlled movement.

Featuring a durable metal gear transmission and an internal position-feedback control system, the MG996R offers improved mechanical strength compared with small plastic-gear servos.

The motor operates from approximately 4.8V to 6.6V DC and provides a rated stall torque of 9.4 kg·cm at 4.8V and 11 kg·cm at 6V for the original TowerPro specification.

Its standard three-wire servo interface makes it compatible with popular microcontrollers, including the Arduino Uno R3 Board and ESP32 WROOM-32 Development Board.

The MG996R is suitable for engineering students, STEM educators, robotics enthusiasts, electronics hobbyists and project developers working on mechanical movement and automation systems.

Whether you are developing a robotic arm, an automated opening mechanism or an RC steering system, this servo provides a practical combination of torque, position control and metal gear durability.

How the MG996R Servo Motor Works

The MG996R uses a position-feedback control system to rotate its output shaft to a commanded angular position.

A microcontroller sends servo control pulses through the signal wire. The servo’s internal electronics interpret these pulses and drive the motor until the output shaft reaches the corresponding position.

For example, an Arduino program can command the servo to move between positions such as 0°, 90° and 180°, subject to the actual mechanical limits and calibration of the particular unit.

This makes the servo useful for applications where an object must be moved to a specific angle and held in position.

MG996R Servo Motor Pin Connections

The MG996R normally uses three wires:

  • Red: Positive power supply (4.8V–6.6V)
  • Brown: Ground (GND)
  • Orange: PWM control signal

Connect the control signal to a suitable GPIO pin on your microcontroller and power the servo using a separate, adequately rated supply.

For Arduino projects, the Arduino Uno R3 Board can generate the required servo control signal using the Arduino Servo library.

For Wi-Fi-enabled robotics or smart automation systems, the ESP32 WROOM-32 Development Board provides a suitable programmable control platform.

Important: The MG996R can draw substantial current during startup or heavy loading. Use an external regulated 5V–6V supply with sufficient current capacity, commonly 2A or more for a single servo depending on the actual unit and load. Connect the external supply ground to the microcontroller ground.

Do not power the servo directly from a microcontroller GPIO pin or assume the development board’s 5V output can provide sufficient current.

Important Usage Notes

  • Use a suitable regulated 5V–6V external power supply with adequate current capacity.
  • Do not connect the servo motor directly to a microcontroller GPIO power output.
  • Connect the grounds of the servo power supply and microcontroller together.
  • Avoid forcing the shaft beyond its mechanical rotation limits.
  • Do not keep the motor stalled against a mechanical obstruction.
  • Actual movement range and torque may vary with operating voltage, loading and manufacturer.
  • The MG996R 180° is a positional servo, not a continuous rotation motor.
  • A standard servo control library can be used; a separate H-bridge motor driver is not required.
