How the MG90S Servo Motor Works
The MG90S is a positional servo that uses an internal motor, metal gearbox, position-feedback mechanism and control circuit to regulate the angle of its output shaft.
A microcontroller sends a servo control signal specifying the required position. The servo interprets this signal and rotates its shaft towards the commanded angle.
For example, an Arduino can instruct the MG90S to move between positions such as 0°, 90° and 180°, allowing it to control mechanical linkages, robotic grippers and steering mechanisms.
The internal feedback system helps the servo maintain its commanded position against external forces within its torque capability.
MG90S Servo Motor Pin Connections
The MG90S features three connection wires:
- Brown – GND: Connect to power supply ground.
- Red – VCC: Connect to a regulated 4.8V–6V DC supply.
- Orange – Signal: Connect to a suitable microcontroller GPIO output for servo position control.
For Arduino projects, the servo can be controlled using the Arduino Servo library.
For wireless automation and IoT projects, the ESP32 WROOM-32 Development Board can generate the servo control signal.
Use a separate regulated 5V supply with sufficient current for the servo, and connect its ground to the microcontroller ground. This helps prevent power disturbances during motor startup and movement.

MG90S vs SG90 Servo Motor
The MG90S and SG90 are compact positional servo motors suitable for electronics and robotics projects.
The MG90S features an all-metal gear transmission, providing greater mechanical strength for applications involving repeated movement and mechanical loading.
The SG90 9g Micro Servo Motor uses nylon gears and is suited to lighter mechanisms and basic servo control experiments.
For projects requiring a compact servo with metal gears, the MG90S is a practical choice.
Compatible Components and Accessories
The MG90S can be integrated with several electronics products available from DIYGH.
Use the Arduino Uno R3 Board with USB Cable to build a basic servo positioning system, sensor-controlled mechanism or robotic arm.
For Wi-Fi-based automation, the ESP32 WROOM-32 Development Board provides programmable control and wireless connectivity.
If you are beginning with electronics and servo motor programming, the Arduino Uno R3 Starter Kit includes components for learning microcontroller programming, circuit prototyping and motor control.
For heavier mechanical applications requiring substantially greater torque, DIYGH also stocks the MG996R 360° Continuous Rotation Metal Gear Servo Motor, designed for continuous rotational movement rather than positional angle control.
