The TCRT5000 IR Reflective Line Tracking Sensor Module is a compact infrared sensing module designed for line detection, short-range object sensing and robotics applications. It uses a TCRT5000 infrared reflective sensor to detect differences in light reflected from nearby surfaces, making it particularly useful for line-following robots and automated systems.
The module contains an infrared-emitting diode and a phototransistor receiver. The infrared emitter directs light towards a surface, while the receiver detects the reflected signal. Light-coloured surfaces generally reflect more infrared light than dark surfaces, allowing a microcontroller to distinguish between contrasting surfaces and respond accordingly.
For robotics enthusiasts, the TCRT5000 sensor is a practical component for building autonomous line-following cars. By positioning the sensor close to the ground, a robot can detect black lines on a white surface or other contrasting paths and adjust its movement based on the sensor output.
The module features an onboard LM393 voltage comparator and an adjustable potentiometer for setting the detection threshold. It provides digital output for straightforward line detection and analog output for applications requiring reflection-level measurements.
Compatible with Arduino, ESP32 and other suitable microcontroller boards, the TCRT5000 is ideal for engineering students, electronics hobbyists, STEM facilitators and robotics project developers in Ghana.

How the TCRT5000 Line Tracking Sensor Works
The sensor emits infrared light towards a nearby surface. When the surface reflects the light, the phototransistor detects the reflected signal.
White or light-coloured surfaces generally produce stronger reflections, while black or dark surfaces absorb more infrared light and produce weaker reflections.
The onboard comparator compares the detected signal against an adjustable threshold to generate a digital HIGH or LOW output. A microcontroller can read this output and use it to control a robot’s movement or trigger another action.
The analog output can also be used to monitor changes in the reflected light intensity.
Important Usage Notes
- For reliable line detection, position the sensor approximately 2–3mm above the surface and adjust its sensitivity.
- Very bright ambient light, reflective materials and surface height can affect detection.
- The module is intended for short-range reflective sensing, not long-distance measurement.
- For ESP32 and Raspberry Pi applications, use 3.3V-compatible signal levels.
- Confirm the pin labels on the actual module before wiring, as connector arrangements may vary between manufacturers.
